FairCharge VAT Cut - Evening Standard

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

The new Chancellor will announce measures to address the rising cost of living in a 'mini-Budget.' For EV drivers, the issue of expensive charging has become a concern, with some public chargers potentially costing £1 per kWh. Charge-point operators report a significant increase in wholesale electricity prices, with costs rising by an average of 130% in the past year, leading to high prices for consumers. Additionally, the 20% VAT on public charging further burdens EV drivers, as it applies to them but not to those charging at home due to outdated VAT legislation that discriminates against drivers without access to a private charging point.
