Apartment EV Owners Face High Costs Due to Lack of Communal Chargers from The Times

A large number of electric vehicle (EV) drivers living in flats are forced to rely on expensive public chargers due to a lack of communal charging stations in residential car parks. A survey found that less than a third of freeholders and property management companies have installed EV chargers for residents, leaving 70% of flat-dwellers dependent on public charging. Public chargers are significantly more expensive, costing around 80p per kWh compared to off-peak home charging rates of 7p per kWh.

Experts say property management companies have been reluctant to install chargers due to the administrative burden, even though new homes with parking spaces are legally required to include EV chargers. However, there are no such requirements for older properties, exempting many developments of flats from having to provide chargers.

ChargeGuru and other charging companies are now offering solutions to install and manage EV chargers for freeholders, though these schemes don't offer the same cost benefits as home charging. The lack of reliable at-home charging options in flats risks stalling the EV transition, making it harder and more expensive for flat-dwellers to switch to electric vehicles. Sauce
